The official definition of a heavy flow - is if you lose more than 80 ml of menstrual fluid over a period.
Most women lose about 30 ml of fluid in 3-7 days. But, of course, this can vary from person to person, over one's lifetime.
The size of the flow is strongly influenced by the choice of methods of birth control. Most people find their flow becomes easier when they start something like hormonal birth control.
A large tampon or overnight pad holds about 10 ml, while a medium-sized one holds 5 ml. According to this, you are having a difficult period if you use:
16 or more conventional pads or tampons per period
or
8 or more giant pads or tampons in one period.
If you're having a particularly tough period, the middle menstrual cup just isn't going to shorten it.
For those of you who have already taken this path, you probably ended up having to empty your cup every hour, or - worse - wiping the stains off your underwear.
We ask you: please don't give up until you try our menstrual cups, made especially for those with heavy flows.
